Snowpack Observations

Details

  • 1 inch (2.5cm) of new snow on Military Pass at Brewer Creek turnoff. Pilgrim Creek snopark is still snowless. One can drive at least to Brewer Creek road, and further, with good 4WD vehicle. Muddy conditions prevail for several miles of the 19 road. 
  • 2-3 inches (5-7cm) of new snow on Ash Creek Butte itself
  • No blowing snow due to moist nature of new snow
  • Bonding very good - old/new snow interface
  • No recent avalanches/signs of instability
  • Riming on trees, rocks and weather station
  • Shallow snowpack hazards are abundant
  • Patches of dirt on ACB loop road
  • Very light zipper crust near treeline on some slopes, near ridgelines
  • Some areas still scoured to old snow.
  • Large plumes of blowing snow visible on east side of Mt Shasta above 9,000 feet

Photos

  • Making our way up the ridge to the weather station, just an inch or two of new snow on top of firm, old snow. Windy.
  • Ash Creek Butte loop road, heading back. A brief doughnut hole in the clouds.
