Snowpack Observations

Details

Castle Lake has a clear, razor thin layer of ice throughout but it is not supportable. The snowpack is frozen solid and ranges from a few inches to 24 inches at higher elevations. Plan on encountering manzanita, logs, rocks, and other forest debris if attempting to recreate in the snow here. No signs of instability were encountered but the rock hard snow surface could provide an ideal bed surface on which future snow could slide. We are continuing to debug communication problems with the Castle Lake weather station.
