Snowpack Observations

Details

Castle Lake on Blue bird day with opportunity of powder stashes. Realizing that soft deep snow at Castle with the gate open is something to look forward to, we ventured out with a plan. Looking at the frozen lake with wind ripping off the ridges and the formidable cornices that need to be dropped by a professional, we decided to go soft and stay in a skin track up right peak. The fresh dry snow sitting on a solid layer was surprising to find across the entire lower 1/3 of right peak. Getting to the saddle of right peak showed wind blown snow in any exposed area that had no shelter. There were plenty of options to ski due to the 60+ inch snow pack (thanks to Castel weather station). Good snow coverage over right peak, but wind was definitely evident during the day blowing from the Northwest-I think. Not getting lost in details, we returned back down to the lake from Right Peak with still soft snow that wasn't too sticky around 1pm
