Castle Lake to Castle Spire

A beautiful day. Clear, blue sky with calm wind. Highly variable snow surfaces. Moments of soft powder brilliance followed by breakable crust and chunky wind buff. Cold, deep, shady hollers, completely sheltered from previous NW wind, held the best snow. Previous northwesterly wind did a number on much of the snowpack near and above treeline. Coverage is good overall and the lake is frozen. No signs of avalanche danger, even in steep terrain. South facing slopes were soft and corn-like, warm, wind blown "powder". Good snow is becoming more difficult to find, but it's still out there.
