Details

Observations during a tour up into Avalanche Gulch to just below Helen Lake:

  • Observation Location: Climbers Gully
  • Elevation: 9,600 ft
  • Date: 20201214
  • Time: 1200
  • Observer: Aaron Beverly
  • Sky Conditions: Broken (BKN)
  • Current Precipitation: NO
  • Air Temperature: 28 °F
  • Surface Penetration: PS - 1 cm
  • Total Snow Depth (HS): 22 in (55 cm)
  • Wind Speed: Calm (C)

Above treeline, snow surface is chalky and slightly wind affected, with subtle sustrugis indicating north and northwest winds. Moraines and ridges are rocky and icy. Gullies hold the best snow, up to 22 inches. Snowpack is thin generally. Rock hazards lurk beneath the snow surface. There is not enough snow in steep areas or start zones to warrant avalanche concerns.
