Snowpack Observations

Details

A sunny, calm day in the Eddy Range. High temperatures barely spilled over 32 degrees F for a 1 hour period. Low sun angle, short days and chilly daytime temps below or near freezing have kept snow quality good.

  • Vehicle traffic up to 5.2 miles up Parks Creek Road from Stewart Mineral Springs. We parked at 4.6 and proceeded via snowmobile on the road to summit trailhead. Icy, snow covered roads begin at about .5 miles.
  • 4 inches at 5,600 feet
  • 30-35 inches at Park Creek Summit - 6,854 feet
  • Drifts 40-50 inches
  • Snowpack stability very good
  • Scoured ridgelines exist as well as shallow buried rocks and trees.

Photos

  • Skin track near the top of Parks Creek Summit
  • Drip rings around trees
  • Minor roller ball action on sunny slopes
  • A look up into the Deadfall drainage
  • A glimpse of Mount Shasta from Parks Creek Road
  • A north facing pit profile, 6,631 feet, just below Parks Creek Summit trailhead
