Snowpack Observations

Details

The snow from October and early November still lingers up high on Mount Shasta. There is about 22 inches at the Old Ski Bowl weather station. Near and below treeline regions have melted out considerably. You will need to hike in a few minutes from Bunny Flat to find a thin band of continuous snow. Melt-freeze cycles have created spring-like corn conditions up high. Visible and hidden obstacles exist. This is not the time to ski hard, but climbers will find favorable conditions. The road above the Bunny Flat gate is devoid of snow until past Panther Meadows campground. The snowmobile access at the parking lot is not in and there is no route to a usable snowpack.

Roads at Upper and Lower Sand Flat are also devoid of snow and no cross country skiiing is possible in this area.

Castle Lake has no snow and the lake is not frozen.
