Snowpack Observations

Details

General conditions observed on a tour to Castle Lake weather station:

  • Lake is not fully frozen and will not support weight.
  • HS: 25-45 cm (10-17 in).
  • Chaparral is mostly buried, though many obstacles exist just beneath the surface snow. Skiing is possible but only for the desperate and adventurous.
  • Ski penetration (PS): 7-12 cm (3-5 in).
  • No signs of instability.

As cloud cover dissipated, surface snow began changing rapidly. Snow falling from trees is pockmarking the surface snow under trees. If considering a ski tour at Castle Lake, you may want to wait for the next round of storms.
