**Happening at Deadwood Supply Co in downtown Mt Shasta!**

Know Before You Go is a free avalanche awareness program. Not much science, no warnings to stay out of the mountains, no formulas to memorize. In 1 hour, you will see the destructive power of avalanches, understand when and why they happen, and how you can have fun in the mountains and avoid avalanches.

The high energy videos and the jaw-dropping slide show, along with the Q&A chat with an avalanche professional, takes the breath away from adults, children, and everyone in between.

The KBYG program has 3 parts, an 18 minute video, a slide show, and a Q&A session, all led by a local avalanche professional. The images are eye-catching and pack a punch. Viewers see the destructive power of avalanches, how people get in trouble, and the basics of how to avoid them, all through the eyes of avalanche professionals, pro athletes, accident victims and rescuers, and their peers. We don't preach and we don't tell skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers to stay home - we encourage them to get some education to get out and have fun safely.

Avalanche transceivers, or beacons, are the best tools we have to find someone buried in an avalanche. Join us and learn how to use one and effectively carry out a companion rescue. It is also a great chance to brush up on your skills. Don't yet have a beacon of your own? Not to worry! We'll have several different types (BCA, Ortovox, Pieps, Mammut/Barryvox) for you to try out. Dress to be outside on the snow. Think warm footwear and gloves! These clinics take place at the Bunny Flat meadow area. Look for our flags!

Don't want to listen to us yak away? You can still come and run through the beacon courses a few times to hone your rescue skills. It's always good to refresh your skills at the beginning of every season. Remember, YOU are the rescue party! Get dialed.

We'll meet at the Bunny Flat parking lot/trailhead about 9 am. Look for the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center flags!

Please email fmsac@fmsac.org to let us know how many of you will be attending, in order to get an (semi-)accurate headcount for lunches. Thanks!

After a successful event last season, we wanted to run it back for anyone who didn't get a chance to learn these crucial backcountry-safety skills!

If you've got a grom at home who wants to play in the snow more than anything else, (and who doesn't?) then have we got the day for you!

For skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, and any youngsters who just want to spend time in the snow. The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center is proud to partner with the Nickolay Dodov Foundation and Mountain Medics to bring you a fun-filled day of Avalanche Safety and hands-on Companion Rescue Beacon Skills practice.

We will start out in a classroom setting with the award-winning Know Before You Go avalanche safety presentation. Not a ton of science, nobody telling you that you can't play in the mountains. Just lots of tips and tricks for how to recognize danger, how to avoid the danger, and how to get home safely each day.

After that we'll head outside and some of our awesome avalanche forecasters will go over the proper steps to take in the event of a burial and search. We'll run through some different scenarios, techniques, and ways to make sure that things are as smooth as possible. We've got plenty of gear for loaners as well. So no worries if you haven't picked it up just yet.

Then we'll set the kids loose on some practice courses and run through some hands-on drills. Nothing beats practice!

When: Saturday, February 21st, 10 am

Where: Mountain Medics Headquarters - 2600 Spring Hill Rd, Mount Shasta

Cost: Free!

Spring will come eventually, or so they tell us.  And, if you're interested in climbing the mountain this spring/summer (2026), join us on Thursday, March 19th from 6-7 pm for a virtual event hosted by SlabLab, with members of the Avalanche Center/Climbing Rangers, and maybe some friendly, local mountain guides from our area!

As the season changes and we shift away from avalanche danger, there's still plenty to know to have a safe, fun time up on Mount Shasta. We'll be here (virtually) to answer any and all of your safety- and mountain-related questions!
