As of 6am this morning, the ground is wet in town and 0.01 inches of water has been recorded at the Old Ski Bowl weather station, with a temperature of 28 degrees F. The height of snow on Mt. Shasta, near treeline, is 57 inches with perhaps a trace of new snow. Yesterday was windy, with big lenticular clouds visible on the mountain all day. Southwest wind averaged 11 mi/hr with gusts to 43 mi/hr. Temperatures have been mild. At treeline, the mean temperature over the past 3 days is 35° F degrees. The 3-day low was 27° F and max of 43° F.
Our area has only received 3-5 inches of new snow since January 8th. The snowpack we do have is well-consolidated and stable. Avalanches have not been a concern for many weeks.
Snow surfaces on Mount Shasta are, uh...variable. Below treeline, a melt-freeze crust has developed. Near and above treeline, the snow is more wind-affected. You'll find stiff wind-board, breakable wind crust and large scoured areas where the old, rough, frozen snow surface dominates. There are many exposed rocks. Generally, skiing and riding conditions are poor, but don't let us be the buzzkill, go check it out and have yourself an adventure.
As for climbing conditions, the upper mountain is scoured and icy prior to the new snow today. Whiteout conditions are possible. Slide for life falls are real. We had one rescue this past week due to a slip/fall, resulting in broken rib(s) and bad abrasions. It's still winter, and climbing conditions are more challenging than in spring or summer. Humbly compare your experience level to the conditions. Bring quality gear and well researched knowledge to deal with an emergency. Always answer the question: Can I survive a night on the mountain in cold and windy conditions should an accident happen?
Mountain Weather:
What is that, rain? A southwest to northwest band of light to moderate precipitation has aligned itself this morning over western Siskiyou County. The core of the precipitation will gradually shift east during the day. Things should stay wet for most of the daylight hours. We will catch a break tonight before another trough moves in, bringing a sprinkle of additional water. Rain and snow showers are expected through Saturday morning. Dry weather for most locations is expected by Saturday afternoon and into next week.
Today, expect snow levels to linger around 6,200 feet. Temperatures are cooling in general, with snow levels near 5,600 feet tonight and 4,100 feet tomorrow. Models indicate about a half inch of water over the next 72 hours, which could mean 6ish inches of snow on the mountain all said and done. Let's hope for a bit more in some places.
Expect windy conditions near and above treeline at times. Wind speeds and direction will bounce around, so pay attention to any wind blowing snow.
