Recent Observations:
Above 5,000 ft, the landscape remains plastered with snow. Skiers yesterday near Ash Creek Butte observed huge touchy cornices along north-facing ridgelines. Signs of old storm slab avalanches were observed. Yesterday, I found that the new snow on convex test slopes was easy to move near and below treeline. Over the last 24 hrs, winds have shifted from the west to the north with speeds dropping into the single digits. Nevertheless, leeward slopes on the top half of the compass have seen consistent wind loading speeds over the last 72 hrs and areas that look innocent and inviting may still host a hefty slab just below the new snow. The freezing level has been hovering around 6,000 ft.
Mountain Weather:
The storm father has taken his eyes off us as moisture will track south of the region today. High pressure will build into Tuesday. A slight chance of showers exists tonight into Tuesday morning. Winds will shift to the north and northwest, with the freezing level dropping to around 3,500 ft as we await the next minor storm to make landfall, early Wednesday.
