Recent Observations:
- Starting October 1st, precipitation for the wet season is 59% of normal. The mountain received an early season storm in November that brought ~30 inches of snow to areas 6,500 feet and above. What remains of that can be seen in yesterday's pre-snowfall-observation
- Overnight, ~16 inches of new snow fell at treeline on Mount Shasta, beginning at 1700 hours and continuing into this morning. Snow/water equivalent (SWE) is .65 inches. Snowfall rates exceeded 2 inches per hour at times
- Currently, the height of snow near treeline is 33 inches
- Over the last 24 hours, we've had a low of 18 ºF and high of 20 ºF. West/southwest wind averaged 14 mi/hr with gusts to 43 mi/hr
- Snow surfaces prior to the storm have been rough. The snowpack was patchy below 7,200 feet, average snow depths of ~10 inches. A widespread melt-freeze crust was observed over the snowpack.
- Many rocks, trees, stumps and other earthly objects still remain exposed. Above treeline is a salt and pepper, snow and rock minefield. If the mountain snowpack was equated to jeans, it would be wearing the skinny kind! Nonetheless, the new snow last night and this weekend will really boost us into proper winter snow coverage.
- Finding continuous snow from Bunny Flat is possible, and the road is covered past the gate. The Sand Flat Winter XC-Ski trails should be coming into better shape very soon and with a little more snow, 4x4 tracks will diminish.
- Observations from the Castle Lake, Eddy Mountains and East of Mount Shasta are limited, but soon to come.
Mountain Weather:
The winter storm that rolled through last night will taper off today. Lingering snow showers are likely this morning, with snow levels to town, or lower. Southwest wind will persist and provide for full value conditions above treeline. Don't be surprised to experience wind gusts 50+ mi/hr over exposed, alpine terrain. Wind chill factor will be below zero. Overnight low temperatures are going to be quite cold, single digits to below zero in some areas. The area will get a short break in the action before additional winter weather arrives into Northern California Saturday night or Sunday. The extended period will commence with a cold upper level low off the Pacific Northwest coast and strong southwest flow aloft over the forecast area.
