Recent Observations:
Observations yesterday from the big mountain found numerous clues of lingering wind slab danger, as well as two different reports of small human-triggered avalanches on SE aspects near and above treeline. Forecasters checking out the St. Germain avalanche from December 30, 2022 experienced moderate wind with strong gusts, blowing snow, and sensitive SE-facing slopes. A thin, slick ice crust was dominant throughout the near and above treeline zones. Forecasters near Ash Creek Butte found crusty conditions with no blowing snow and generally stable snow. Of note given this week's stormy weather was the presence of a one-inch layer of near surface facets below the surface ice crust on east-facing aspects. This will be something to watch as new snow accumulates over the next few days.
Just like at the airport, if you see something say something! With stormy weather this week, consider submitting an observation to the Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center if out recreating. Even a few sentences or a photo goes a long way.
A small (D1) snowmobile-triggered wind slab with numerous red flags was observed yesterday near treeline in the Old Ski Bowl:

A week of stormy weather begins today with clouds and the chance of precipitation increasing throughout the day. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect today from 10am to 10pm. Temperatures will be relatively cold with the freezing level below 4,000'. Moderate to strong winds today and tomorrow will add to the cold-factor with wind chills in the single digits to below 0°. More mild storm conditions are expected on Tuesday with lighter winds and snow totals. However, Wednesday is when the stronger storm will be arriving.
