Recent Observations:
A small storm that rolled through on 12/22 and 12/23 brought .25" of water and warm temperatures. Yesterday, I went up high on Mount Shasta to investigate the wind slab problem and see if any new snow was blowing around. The short answer is, no loose snow exists, and the snowpack has been capped off by a rain and rime glaze (full observation here), near and above treeline. The icy glaze near treeline is widespread, extending up to ~9,000 feet before transitioning to a rime crust above. Higher on the mountain, conditions are likely smooth, icy and dangerous should one slip and fall. Below treeline, about 1" of wet snow could be measured on top of a soft crust. Above freezing temps made for drippy trees. It felt very coastal below treeline in the heavy fog and cloud layer. No signs of avalanche danger presented at any elevation. Snow surfaces are challenging at best.
Mountain Weather:
We are in the waiting room of an active pattern, with an upper ridge shifting east ahead of the next round of wet weather to round off 2022. Temperatures are very warm and breezy over exposed ridges and upper elevations on the mountain. A small front moves on shore this morning, bringing the bulk of its precipitation to areas along the coast. Christmas will see another break before the next system moves into the area Monday afternoon. The remainder of the week will host an active, westerly flow pattern bringing ample precipitation, wind and temperatures cooler than as of late.
