Recent Observations:
Our observations yesterday revealed a snowpack that is much more stable than expected. We had anticipated that prior snowfall and winds would lead to areas of instability and potential wind slabs. Our observers found that the warm, heavy snow bonded well to the existing rain crust from December 23rd. The crust is still prevalent at all aspects, about 15 cm below the surface of the snow.
Above treeline, we didn't find the 14 inches of new snow that had been reported by the Old Ski Bowl weather station. This was one of those examples of going into the field armed with data, an idea of what to expect, and then finding almost the complete opposite. But it's a good reminder to always check what you're expecting to see with what's actually in front of your eyes and, perhaps more importantly, under your feet.
Mountain Weather:
Well folks, we're not out of it just yet. Today should see a lull in storm activity this morning, but don't let that fool you. Our winter weather advisory remains in effect, with winds on the upper mountain expected to reach back up into the 40-60 mph range this afternoon. Along with those winds we should see an increase in precipitation, with between 9-17 inches of snow predicted to fall on the upper mountain between Wednesday night and Thursday. This last storm system had snow levels of about 6,000 feet, but this next system should bring colder temperatures and a snow level dropping to about 3,500 feet. Expect some lower density snow at higher elevations which, coupled with the high winds, will see an increase in snow transport.
