Recent Observations:
Red flags of avalanche danger were present yesterday. Here is the recap:
- Mt Shasta, near treeline, Old Ski Bowl, ~8,000 feet, upside down cake snowpack structure: dense, light wind affected snow on top of softer, lower density snow. Slabs ~1 foot thick were easily triggered in pit tests with moderate (Q2) shear quality. Areas with a touch of wind and stiff snow near the surface had the most sensitive test results.
- Whumpfing felt and heard near treeline in same area of snow pit and stability tests
- Shooting cracks observed near treeline in the Gray Butte / Mt. Shasta Ski Park area
- Cracking and blocking observed along small test slopes on Green Butte Ridge
- Westerly wind was moderate and spatially variable
- Warming occurred in the afternoon. Snow levels fluctuated between 6,000 to 7,000 feet

Mountain Weather:
An atmospheric river event has brought significant precipitation to the area over the past week. Nearly 4.5 inches of water and 26.5 inches of snow has been recorded at our Old Ski Bowl weather station near treeline on Mt. Shasta. Active weather will taper off today through Sunday, and north/northwest flow will bring windy conditions. The extended term will be an active one, marked by cooler temperatures and wet conditions for the New Year. Systems will begin to enter the area Monday and arrive almost daily through the end of the week. Snow levels will hover between roughly 3,000 and 4,000 feet. Overall, it looks to be an excellent chance to improve drought conditions and build sorely needed mountain snowpack.
For today, N/NW wind will be a thing with cooling temperatures. A chance of snow exists this morning, but accumulation will be minimal, if any. As mentioned, the weather is stepping out for a short set break before firing up for 2023.
