Recent Observations:
Over the last 24 hours, sunny clear skies with extreme north winds dominated Mount Shasta near and above treeline. Observations from the Old Ski Bowl yesterday verified the windy conditions, with wind effected snow and widespread sastrugi features covering even the most sheltered areas. Gray Butte weather station recorded nearly 15 hours of gusts above 90 mph. An avalanche was also found in Sun Bowl (south aspect, R2D1) that appeared to be a shallow wind slab. Another crown was noted at a similar aspect and elevation on Casaval Ridge. Below treeline, broken trees and branches are in abundance. Similar conditions were observed at Horse Camp: broken trees and branches, variable snow surface conditions, and lenticular clouds near the summit. With the persisting windy conditions, it's becoming harder and harder to find good snow in well protected areas.

Mountain Weather:
High pressure aloft will remain dominant throughout the Mount Shasta region. This high pressure is bringing northerly flow and with it colder temperatures and freezing fog in sheltered areas. A slight temperature inversion will develop this morning in valley floors surrounding Mount Shasta. Exposed upper elevation areas will be breezy. High pressure will strengthen throughout the majority of the week, with a slight chance of precipitation over the weekend.
