Recent Observations:
Yesterday, signs of avalanche danger were prevalent. Heavy snowfall, strong southwest wind and shooting cracks were observed in the Castle Lake area. Visibility was poor. Snow pit stability tests have been indicating the weak, sugary snow at the base of the snowpack is gaining strength. That said, we are in for a rapid loading event over the next 24 hours. Stay vigilant. Primary instability yesterday was in the upper half of the snowpack, wind affected terrain near treeline. Small slabs were easily triggered on test slopes. Shooting cracks beneath skis was commonplace.
Over the past 24 hours on Mt Shasta:
- Temperatures have ranged from 11° to 21° F at treeline. Average temperature: 18° F
- The wind has blown out of the SW-W-NW. Max gusts reached 37 mph. Average speed: 13 mph
- Snow accumulation: 7 inches / Snow-Water Equivalent: .65 inches
Mountain Weather:
The next storm is shaping up over the Pacific and will make landfall today. A winter storm warning remains in effect from 4 PM this afternoon to 10 PM PST Saturday. Heavy, wet snow is expected. Nearly 3 inches of water is forecasted, which could mean up to 3 feet of new snow by the end of the storm. Strong wind out of the south/southwest is certain. Wind and precipitation will diminish late Saturday afternoon and into Saturday night. A cold air mass will move overhead Sunday, brining cold temperatures and dry weather for the next work week.
