Recent Observations:
The California Cooperative Snow Surveys (CCSS) have begun for the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The CCSS program provides mountain snowpack data and stream flow forecasts for the western United States. It is a partnership of more than 50 state, federal and private agencies. The agencies share a pool of expert staff and program funding, which collects, analyzes and disseminates snow data from more than 265 snow courses and 130 snow sensors located throughout the Sierra Nevada and Shasta-Trinity mountains. Common applications of snow survey products include water supply management, flood control, climate modeling, recreation and conservation planning. The past two days, Forest Service personnel have completed the Deadfall (Trinity drainage) and Gray Rocks (Sacramento drainage).
Over the last 24 hours, sunny and clear weather continued with no precipitation in the region. Temperatures have begun to drop and winds have picked up with the cold front arriving. Observations from Gray Rocks yesterday showed similar trends that have been seen for the last few days. Very firm surface conditions can be found on all aspects and elevations. New small and shallow wind slabs and drifts were found on southerly facing slopes, though unreactive to trigger. In cold and shaded areas, sugary snow (near surface facets) is becoming more prevalent.

Mountain Weather:
A cold front arrived last night, bringing arctic air to the Mount Shasta region. No significant accumulation is expected, however this front did bring very cold temperatures. Below treeline, winds will remain moderate, gusting to strong (>26 mph). Near and above treeline, winds will quickly increase to strong, gusting to extreme (>38 mph). On the upper reaches of the mountain, winds are expected to be gale force and very cold. Climbers, expect wind chill values of -20 F and lower. This weather will continue, with the coldest conditions expected tonight into tomorrow morning. Temperatures will slowly warm after Monday, with high pressure remaining through most of the week.
