Recent Observations:
Over the last 24 hours, strong to extreme northeast winds kicked on, bringing very low temperatures to the Mount Shasta area. Winds near treeline have been above 20 mph since 12 pm yesterday. Sunny weather prevailed, though not providing much for warmth. Observations from Old Ski Bowl yesterday showed poor snow surface conditions below, near, and above treeline. Below and near treeline consisted of a widespread sun crust, with occasional soft snow in shaded areas. Above treeline, very firm and slick surface conditions made it hard just to stand on the surface. The sastrugi wind features in the upper Old Ski Bowl are becoming less pronounced.

Mountain Weather:
An upper level ridge has developed off the coast, and a low has settled over southern California. This combined with the jet stream has brought cold arctic air to the region. Overnight, the cold front moved over Mount Shasta, bringing continued cold temperatures for the region today into tomorrow. This morning will likely be the coldest temperatures seen so far this season. No significant snow accumulation is expected. Below treeline, winds will remain light, gusting to moderate (17-25 mph). Near and above treeline, winds will increase to strong, gusting to extreme (>38 mph). Climbers should expect the upper mountain to easily dip below -20 F. Temperatures will slowly warm after today. A few small storm systems are lining up for later this week and weekend.
