Recent Observations:
While climbing the lower Casaval Ridge route yesterday, I experienced below-freezing temperatures with strong northeast winds blowing snow onto leeward south and southwest aspects. Winds kept the snow surfaces slick and icy over convexities, gully walls and tops of ridgelines. The cold temperatures and winds have helped decrease the danger of rock or icefall. High-consequence slip and fall conditions were present and the use of crampons and ice axe were mandatory. The sun has had minimal effect on warming the snow surface on southerly aspects near and above treeline.
Mountain Weather:
With high pressure residing overhead, today will remain dry and mostly cloudy. The Mount Shasta City and the Gray Butte weather stations are reading below-freezing temperatures this morning. The current cold temperatures are looking to ease up and become milder today through Wednesday, with winds shifting from northeast to southwest. The next best chance for precipitation and stormy weather looks to begin on Thursday.
