Recent Observations:
Most notable of recent observations came from Green Butte yesterday. A widespread surface crust (~4mm) was found on W-S-E aspects, with increased stiffness above treeline. This crust created a very smooth snow surface across all aspects. This will likely define the stability and cohesion of the incoming snow. Observers also noted light precipitation in the form of graupel throughout the ski tour.

Mountain Weather:
An atmospheric river event has arrived at our doorstep! We have entered a Winter Weather Warning and High Wind Warning through at least the next 24 hours, encompassing all of the Mt. Shasta area. Heads' up everybody, although there is little precipitation in town this morning, this storm is going to intensify throughout the day. There will likely be 25 to 40 inches of new snow at treeline by tomorrow morning, with that number increasing on the upper mountain. The region will recieve up to 3 inches of water in the next 24 hours. Winds will begin moderate gusting to strong, quickly becoming strong gusting to extreme. Models show potential gusts up to 115 mph on the upper mountain.
These conditions are not to be underestimated. Weather conditions may present as moderate through the morning, but this will change quickly. With extreme winds and high precipitation intensity, visibility will likely be very poor, making travel extremely difficult anywhere near or above treeline.
Freezing levels will be around 4000' today, rising to 5000' tonight. At elevations below freezing levels, expect high amounts of precipitation in the form of rain that could result in flooding.
On a side note, this storm has the potential to knock down trees and powerlines, potentially making road travel difficult.
