Recent Observations:
In the last 24 hours, 3–4 inches of new snow fell in the mountains of the Mount Shasta area. Winds have blown strong with extreme gusts out of the northeast. Gray Butte weather station recorded gusts of around 50 mph for the last 24 hours.
Observations yesterday were from Avalanche Gulch and Green Butte ridge area, where strong to extreme winds made it nearly impossible to travel above treeline. Down slope northerly winds blew snow hundreds of feet into the air, creating turbulent suspension and wind transport all across Mount Shasta. Large sections of icy scoured snow surfaces followed by deep wind drifts could be found in abundance. Many leeward terrain features were visibly wind loaded with 12–15 inches of transported snow. Visibility was obscured at times due to blowing snow, with the summit fully obscured at all times. Below treeline, conditions remained warm with light winds and new snow. No avalanche activity was reported or observed yesterday.

Mountain Weather:
A low pressure system is sitting over central California, pulling dry northeast air over Siskiyou county. High pressure will remain over the Mount Shasta region today, bringing clear skies and northeast winds. A temperature inversion in the valleys this morning will push out to warmer temperatures throughout the day. Freezing levels will hover around 4,500 feet today, rising to 5,500 feet tonight. Northeast winds will remain light to moderate below treeline, becoming strong to extreme near and above treeline. Temperatures will begin to drop Monday morning as a cold front comes into the region. Freezing levels are expected to drop throughout Monday. Models are in agreement of some light precipitation Monday night into Tuesday. Longer term, a slightly more significant storm is still tracking for February 14-15.
