Recent Observations:
Yesterday morning, 4 inches of dry snow fell at 7,000 feet, with observations taken from Green Butte. Winds blowing from the northwest at moderate speeds and strong gusts transported snow onto leeward southerly slopes near and above treeline. Fresh wind drifts were found sensitive on convex terrain features near treeline and slid easily on a crust beneath the new snow. The cohesiveness of these drifts was not outstanding, averaging a four-finger density in the top 3 - 5 cm, with softer snow beneath. Nevertheless, I found drifts up to one foot thick below ridgelines and convex rollovers growing ever deeper. Visibility was poor limiting observations to near and below treeline. Over the last 24 hours winds have blown from the northeast averaging a speed of 18 mph with gusts of 50 mph. Temperatures have remained below freezing with a max temperature of 18° F.

Today will be a cold start with mountain temperatures in the mid-teens gradually increasing to near and above-freezing levels by the afternoon. Winds will blow from the northeast at light to moderate speeds. Clear and sunny skies will make for a high-visibility day. High pressure will build overhead today, then move eastward tonight. Thursday a trough approaches the west coast from the north, staging up the next round of weather.
