Recent Observations:
Recent natural and human-triggered avalanches were observed yesterday during a tour on the southeast side of Gray Butte. Cracking and blocking underfoot with unstable test results presented evidence that the snowpack was unstable. Continual loading by the wind, snow, and rain was observed near and below treeline. At 5,000 feet the top 5 inches of the snowpack was saturated and a boot penetration to upper thigh was experienced. Rain runnels were observed on all aspects. An edgy and spooky atmosphere was the vibe experienced in the mountains yesterday. Over the last 24 hours a west and southwest wind direction has averaged speeds of 18 mph with a max gust of 55 mph. An additional 3 inches of high-density snow has fallen at the Old Ski Bowl weather station with fewer amounts reported else where.
Mountain Weather:
Nearly 2 inches of water is forecasted to fall today with 14 to 20 inches of snow predicted for upper elevations. A flood watch is in effect for the Mount Shasta area through this afternoon. A stalled upper-level trough is lifting moisture from an atmospheric river and bringing precipitation across southern Oregon and northern California. This system is expected to move slowly eastward across the region this morning, followed by a short wave trough deepening to a mid-level low-pressure system by mid-day. As a result, additional precipitation is expected for the Mount Shasta area. Mountain temperatures will remain warm with a snow level of 5,000 feet. As of this morning, winds have died down and will remain at light to moderate speeds from the south and southwest. Stormy conditions will make for poor visibility throughout the day. Clouds will gradually break and skies will clear as nightfall arrives. Sunny and cold conditions are on the horizon for tomorrow.
