Recent Observations:
Yesterday's outing on Gray Butte revealed 6 – 8 inches of new snow with no wind effect below treeline. Near treeline south and southeast winds were blowing at calm to light speeds. Small wind lips and textured surfaces were observed at ridge tops. Less blowing snow was experienced than anticipated and the stormy conditions limited my visibility. The storm slab problem was present and most of my steps displayed cracking and collapsing underfoot. Multiple storm slab interfaces ranging in depths from 10 cm to 40 cm were revealed in a “burp the baby” test with planner bed surfaces. A weak layer at 60 cm down continually displayed rough planner results on moderate force during a CT test and could not get to propagate. Rain transitioned to snow at 5,300 feet, consisting of a less dense quality than the day prior.
Mountain Weather:
Over the last 24 hrs winds have averaged a south and southeast direction with a speed of 10 mph and a max gust of 50 mph. Mount Shasta received 11 inches of new snow yesterday with the west side mountains and Ash Creek Butte reporting amounts in the mid-teens. Today the region will earn a reprieve from the weather as the last of the storm system exits the region and high-pressure takes over. Valley fog and low clouds may be present this morning, gradually burring off and giving way to sunny and clear skies. Mountain temperatures will trend from cool to warm reaching near or above-freezing levels. Winds have died down and will blow from the north and northeast at light speeds. Tranquil weather will continue tonight through tomorrow with more sun and warmer temperatures. Another round of wet precipitation looks to be in store this weekend.
