Recent Observations:
Yesterday we went up to take a look at how all the recent rain and subsequent snow had affected things up at Castle Lake. Large rain runnels were visible everywhere, up to about 6,500 feet or so. During the rain on Sunday and Monday, wet loose slides were released on most of the north-facing aspects we observed. About 6-8 inches of new snow was lying on top of the avalanche debris, from the colder-than expected temperatures on Tuesday and Tuesday night.
Across all aspects we found a dense, 6 cm thick ice layer about 33 cm below the surface. The new snow that fell on top was separated by an almost imperceptible layer 23 cm down. This is likely the new snow interchange from what fell during the day on Tuesday and what fell later that night, as things got colder. Tests on the new snow revealed the weak layer in isolation, but observers were unable to cause any reaction on test slopes throughout the day, despite significant efforts to do so.
Mountain Weather:
Today we're looking at sunny, clear skies throughout our forecast zone. Light, single-digit speed winds will accompany a couple days of high pressure. On Saturday we should see a displacement of the high-pressure system with some weather coming in on Saturday night. Sunday will see snow levels dropping to 3,000-3,500 feet, as a bit more snow is on the horizon. We're only forecasted to see about .5-4 inches through Monday, but then a stronger plume of moisture is expected to move our direction by Tuesday. The winds are also expected to shift to coming out of the south then which, as we've seen this winter, should increase our snowfall. We're looking at something in the range of 4-10 inches of snow on Tuesday, though obviously this can change between now and then.
