Recent Observations:
The most significant finding from a tour up to Castle Lake was the lacking amount of fresh snow available for wind transport. Wind effected surfaces were evident near treeline but no blowing snow was observed. It’s likely that a sub-regional difference in snowfall amounts between the Castle lake area and Mount Shasta occurred. Or any snow that did fall has all been blown away. All aspects below treeline held a punchy surface crust. The majority of terrain near treeline is locked up with frozen surfaces. Protected northerly aspects hold light amounts of soft wind effected snow. Monstrous cornices loom off the ridge tops with signs of old cornice fall and avalanche debris beneath them.
Mountain Weather:
Today will bring forth low cloud cover and cool temperatures for the mountains and lower elevations. Winds will blow from the west and southwest at calm to light speeds. As the low-pressure system off the central coast of California moves inland and begins to dissipate, another upper level trough will approach the west cost this morning and move on shore later today. Expect precipitation chances to increase significantly across the Cascades westward this afternoon. Snow showers will remain light with low snow amounts expected. Snow levels could drop as low as 3,000 feet tonight as the tough move through. A chance for moderate precipitation will arrive tomorrow as a cold front moves onshore.
