Recent Observations:
It's that time of year: if you don't like the weather, just wait 10 minutes. A snow flurry here, blue sky there...you don't know what you're going to get. Spatial variability has been a theme for the forecast area. Yesterday's weather trend brought mostly cloudy sky with a cloud deck near 6,500 feet. Light on again, off again snow fall remained throughout the day. Pending your location, new snow totals range from just a skiff to about six inches. Over the past 24 hours, temperatures have ranged from 12 to 29 degrees near treeline. Wind has blow predominantly out of the northwest, averaging 21 mi/hr with gusts to 67 mi/hr. The most notable avalanche hazard has been freshly formed cornices along ridges and small, isolated wind slabs. See the full observation from Gray Butte yesterday.
Mountain Weather:
Snow showers linger as cold, moist, unstable air swings through the forecast area. This unusually cold, onshore flow will persist over the next 24 hours. We trend notably drier by Saturday night and Sunday morning as high pressure builds. We're expecting cold high temperatures of 39 degrees in Mount Shasta City tomorrow. The average high temperature is 54 degrees for this time of year. A stiff northwest wind is certain today over higher terrain. Wind should slack off later this weekend. Longer term, all signs are pointing towards Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning as being the main event. There is good agreement in models that the Mount Shasta area will get moderate to heavy snow with snowfall rates pushing 1–2 inches per hour, with 24 hour storm total between 1–2 feet along the I-5 corridor and 2–3 feet along highway 89 east of the interstate.
