Recent Observations:
Over the past 24 hours, a warm front passed over the forecast area. Mostly clear skies brought increased surface temperatures, with heavy clouds up high on Mount Shasta. Temperatures have ranged from 32° to 53° near treeline. Wind has remained light out of the west, with strong winds above treeline.
Yesterday's observations come from the Old Ski Bowl area. Temperatures were far above freezing, saturating the surface snow immensely. At 8,000 feet, we measured about 6 inches of super saturated snow on top of 5 inches of light, and dry old snow. This all sits on top of a crust that developed prior to the April 6/7 storm. Boot penetration was around 30 cm (12 inches). Strong wind at higher elevations on Mount Shasta was helping to keep snow surface temps slightly cooler, resulting in a little less saturation than surrounding areas. Wet loose activity was observed on all aspects below and near treeline, with a few significant wet loose naturals witnessed on northwest facing terrain.

Mountain Weather:
Sunny and breezy weather continues for the Mount Shasta area today. The most notable change in weather will be the increasing winds through tomorrow. The wind should be relatively light out of the southwest below treeline. Above treeline, sustained strong winds are expected, with gale force gusts. Daytime temperatures are expected to be quite warm (51° high at 6,000 feet), then slowly dropping overnight into tomorrow. Skies will be mostly clear today, with building clouds in the late afternoon. Rain/snow is possible starting in the late afternoon through tonight, although precipitation amounts are quite low (0.16 inches of water). In the next couple of days, temperatures will drop as a subsequent cold front passes over. Freezing levels are expected to be at the base on Tuesday night and Wednesday. The rest of the weak looks relatively clear and cold.
