Recent Observations:
Yesterday’s splendid visibility lent its hand to gathering some significant observations. The upper mountain displayed large panels of wind-textured snow. Near treeline, evidence of old storm slab avalanches were spotted on steep west facing slopes. On the upper mountain, I observed no old or recent avalanche activity. I found wind-loaded slopes near treeline on both west and east aspects. Test results found a thin, weak layer of snow about 50 cm down on a east aspect, and 90 cm down on a west aspect. Near and above treeline cornices have become very large along ridgelines. Yesterday, a forecaster near Ash Creek Butte experienced strong north wind blowing snow for several hours, creating shallow touchy wind slabs on the southern half of the compass, with a report of a human-triggered wind slab on a southeast face near treeline.
Mountain Weather:
Winter is here to stay in Mount Shasta. Today’s stable weather means sunny blue skies, calm wind out of the north around 5 to 10 mph, and temperatures hovering in the lower 30s. However, this pattern will change tonight into Wednesday as a cold front moves quickly across the region, bringing moderate south and southwesterly winds, temperatures in the mid-20s with freezing levels around 3,000 ft and 2 to 4 inches of snow possible at higher elevations by late Wednesday.
