Recent Observations:
Over the last 24 hours, winds have blown from the northwest, averaging a speed of 27 mph. Temperatures have stayed below freezing since 1500 (3:00 pm) yesterday. Skies were mostly clear with low clouds developing late afternoon/evening. On a mission to Ash Creek Butte yesterday, Sam and I experienced strong to extreme northwest winds near treeline. Consistent snow transport was observed onto southerly aspects of Mount Shasta and Ash Creek Butte throughout the day. Winds were felt ripping through any exposed locations near and below treeline causing trees to break and lose their branches. Protected areas below treeline still fostered unaffected soft snow. Melt freeze crusts were found on southerly aspects in the morning, rebounding back to smooth and moist by mid-afternoon.
Mountain Weather:
As of 5 am this morning the Old Ski Bowl weather station has not recorded any new precipitation with the City of Mount Shasta weather station reporting a slight dusting. This will likely change in the morning hours, with 2 – 4 inches possible at the upper elevations. Moderate to strong northwest winds will gradually shift north to northeast over the next 24 hours. Temperatures have plummeted and will stay below freezing levels today and tonight as one of the coldest air masses of the season encroaches upon the region. Driving this cold air is an upper-level trough which will dig its way southeastwards today, with mountains north and west of the cascades forecasted to see the most significant weather impacts. Expect wind chill values as low as -7 with blowing snow and cloudy skies becoming clear by tonight.
