Recent Observations:
- This morning at 0500, there is no new snow accumulation at treeline on Mt. Shasta. Only 0.04 inches of water has been recorded. The current temperature is 30 ºF.
- The daytime high (past 24 hours) of 40 ºF was 10 degrees cooler than the day prior on Mount Shasta. The low temperature overnight was 29°F. South/southeast winds have averaged 9 mi/hr and gusted up to 36 mi/hr. The height of snow at Old Ski Bowl is 44.5 inches.
- The best snow surfaces for sliding, riding, and climbing will be in gullies. Moraines and ridges are devoid of snow until 10,000 ft. Above, skiers and climbers have found good conditions below the Red Banks. Here are some pictures and observations taken from Avalanche Gulch recently.
- For climbers, rockfall is being observed in Avalanche Gulch. Wear a helmet and start early if making a summit attempt.
- We have lost close to 9 inches of snow in the last 4 days. There is no longer continuous snow out of Bunny Flat up into Avalanche Gulch. Conditions in Avalanche Gulch are starting to resemble that of a normal June.
- Sand Flat trails still have some usable snow for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, but it's going fast. The snow is littered with forest debris.
- The ice on Castle Lake is not usable. It is weak and melted around the edges. The trail to Heart Lake is still covered in snow and provides the only access to Middle Peak for skiers.
- You can now drive to within 1.5 miles of the North Gate trailhead, but a high-clearance 4x4 is recommended. Clear Creek and Brewer Creek trailheads still have 7-13 miles of snow on them. View road conditions of the north and east side in recent obs.
- The Tri-Forest Snowmobile Trails are melted out enough to make the riding hard on the body and machines and is not recommended. Grooming operations have ceased. It's time to put the snowmachines away for the summer.
- (Below) : 3.27.22 - Gray Rocks snow survey. The pictures tell the story. We walked 7 miles round trip with our skis mostly on our back. The average height of snow at the course was 23.5 inches, with a water content of 10.5 inches. Lakes are beginning to melt out and many of the trails are free of snow. Our vehicle was parked at the Fawn Creek Bridge up the South Fork of the Sacramento River. Patchy snow limited access past here.
Mountain Weather:
Low pressure will gradually move inland today, though the center of the storm is way to the south. That said, we should see some scattered showers over the area, with snow levels around 6,300 feet. I would not expect much out of this storm. Behind all this, dry weather will return. Tuesday will clear up, and the north wind will return.
