Recent Observations:
Small wind slabs were found yesterday on cross-loaded and leeward S-SE-E facing terrain yesterday. Slabs with easy to moderately force were triggered during pit tests on small, low angle test slopes. Check out yesterday's full observation for more details.
On Mount Shasta, we have 32 inches of snow on the ground at treeline. Our snowpack continues to build. Many shallow buried objects exist. Another couple storms are necessary for full coverage. Skiing steep avalanche terrain is not happening yet due to lack of coverage. In proper Mount Shasta style, westerly wind has scoured ridges and exposed moraines. Many of our classic, "frequent flyer" avalanche paths lack uniform snow coverage and are not capable of producing a large avalanche with our current snowpack. Many rocks and other objects are anchoring the snowpack in place. All told, with a cautious eye, skiers are finding some nice swizzles in cruisy, low angle gullies. Snowmobiles should stick to mostly roads, or risk repairs to body and/or machine.
- Starting October 1st, precipitation for the wet season is 65% of normal. The mountain received our first real storm of the season in early November that brought ~30 inches of snow to areas 6,500 feet and above. What snow remained before the December 1st storm can be seen in our pre-snowfall-observation
- No new snow in the last 24 hours. Temperatures dropped to a low of 6 ºF and high of 19 ºF at treeline on Mount Shasta. West/northwest wind averaged 17 mi/hr with gusts to 43 mi/hr at 8,000 feet on Gray Butte
- Snow surfaces, prior to the 12/1 storm, have been rough. The snowpack was patchy below 7,200 feet, average snow depths of ~10 inches. A widespread melt-freeze crust was observed over the snowpack.
- Observations from the Castle Lake, Eddy Mountains and East of Mount Shasta are limited, but soon to come!
Mountain Weather:
Today, expect mostly clear skies. Cold temperatures and windy conditions will persist, especially above treeline over exposed terrain. A low pressure center resides off the coast of Vancouver Island and will track south into the weekend. Our next round of winter weather will not make its way inland until midday Saturday. By Sunday night, the low weakens as it moves onshore. More on the weekend storm in tomorrow's forecast. Longer term, models are excited to show a system next Thursday or Friday. Fingers crossed!
