Recent Observations:
Observations over the past few days have remained relatively consistent with variable crusts and stiff snow on E-SE-S-SW-W aspects, and soft unconsolidated snow on NW-N-NE aspects and in shaded, protected locations. Recent observations for Castle Lake can be read HERE and Avalanche Gulch HERE and HERE. Forecasters at Castle Lake yesterday found variable crusts and icy skinning conditions on E-SE-S aspects and dry soft snow on N-NE aspects. The lake was frozen and made for quick travel back to the parking area. The current snowpack is well-consolidated and stable with good "right side up" character. No signs of instability or avalanches have been observed.

Mountain Weather:
West-to-east winds which are moving moisture onshore (see zonal flow), coupled with orographic lifting, will bring a chance of precipitation to the forecast area today and tonight. Values for new snow are expected to be small with only 2-4 inches expected at Bunny Flat. This will be accompanied by a rising freezing level, bringing temperatures at Bunny Flat within a few degreees of the freezing point (32°F/0°C). Winds below treeline should be light with moderate gusts. This, however, is a different story at higher elevations with the National Weather Service advising of strong winds above treeline. The combination of some new snow, overcast skies, and moderate-to-strong winds should reduce overall visibility at upper elevations.
