Recent Observations:
The recent observations both on Mt Shasta and at Castle Lake show a snowpack with increasing stability. The facets noticed in the field lately have continued their rounding, leading to a generally non-reactive snowpack. No avalanches, either natural or human-triggered have been reported during this last storm cycle. Even during repeated attempts, forecasters were unable to get the snow to slide. If the hooting and hollering coming off the mountain is to be believed, this has led to some great winter recreation for the past few days!
Mountain Weather:
The high-pressure system will remain in place for today, though that looks to be changing in a big way. A series of storms will move in early Thursday, around 4 am. These fronts are expected to bring higher winds and snowy conditions, with the potential for upwards of 10+ inches on the upper portions of the mountain. The winds coming with the snow are projected in the 40 mph range up near Lake Helen, so adjust your travel and recreation plans accordingly. If you're out on Thursday and it seems like it's getting windier...that's because it is!
