Recent Observations:
- The daytime high was a little cooler yesterday at 50 ºF on Mount Shasta. The low temperature overnight was 36°F. South/southeast winds have averaged 6 mi/hr and gusted up to 24. The height of snow at Old Ski Bowl is 45 inches.
- The best snow surfaces for sliding, riding, and climbing will be in gullies. Moraines and ridges are devoid of snow until 10,000 ft. Above, skiers and climbers have found good conditions below the Red Banks. Here are some pictures and observations taken from Avalanche Gulch recently.
- For climbers, rockfall is being observed in Avalanche Gulch. Wear a helmet and start early if making a summit attempt.
- We have lost close to 9 inches of snow in the last 4 days. There is no longer continuous snow out of Bunny Flat up into Avalanche Gulch. Conditions in Avalanche Gulch are starting to resemble that of a normal June.
- Sand Flat trails still have some usable snow for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, but it's going fast. The snow is littered with forest debris.
- The ice on Castle Lake is not usable. It is weak and melted around the edges. The trail to Heart Lake is still covered in snow and provides the only access to Middle Peak for skiers.
- You can now drive to within 1.5 miles of the North Gate trailhead, but a high-clearance 4x4 is recommended. Clear Creek and Brewer Creek trailheads still have 7-13 miles of snow on them. View road conditions of the north and east side in recent obs.
- The Tri-Forest Snowmobile Trails are melted out enough to make the riding hard on the body and machines and is not recommended. Grooming operations have ceased. It's time to put the snowmachines away for the summer.
Photos: Deadfall Lakes snow survey yesterday. Average height of snow is 19.5 inches with a snow-water equivalent of 8.4 inches. Full April snow results to post when surveys are complete. - Meyers/Lazzeri
Mountain Weather:
A low pressure system moves onshore to the south-southeast today. Showers will develop this afternoon and tonight. Precipitation will be focused along the coast today and eventually the mountains. Snow levels will remain high, generally 6,000 feet and above. In addition to the precipitation, ahead of the low, expect windy conditions over exposed terrain. Southerly wind in the 30-40 mi/hr range is forecast. So... wind today, increasing clouds, cooling temps, a modest amount of rain and mountain snow tonight, then gradually clearing next week.
